How about we focus on poor implementation, misunderstandings, and building teacher knowledge so we don’t under or over teach anything?
Instead of waiting for the commentators to weigh in, deepen pedagogy. The “too much phonics” crowd doesn’t speak from the trenches.
There are still places where the "science of reading" conversation has barely started, and I'm worried that we are talking about "over-teaching" phonics when we're still under-teaching in many classrooms.
How about, "what's optimal and are we doing too much or too little?"
When learning the program takes precedence over teacher knowledge, this is the result. The Fundations quiz for “marking up” a word is phonics overload.
Common sense goes out the window.

It’s usually the journalists, the researchers far removed from classrooms, and the influencers setting the stage with broad-stroke generalizations. Time for another “story” 🙄
Are there schools overdosing on phonics?
Absolutely.
But the dozens of threads I’ve read re: this argument the last few days seem much more centered around:
1. An obscene amount of minutes of places still focusing on oral-only PA
And
2. Not enough time in text

Look at what can be accomplished with an inexpensive, structured decoding and spelling manual.
When people realize that Mississippi is spending between $10-$13k per pupil & has gone from 49th in education to 9th in the nation in 13 years, & that they did so by switching to a pre-90s phonics curriculum instead of just flooding a bad system with more money. They'll revolt

In elementary school, students learn to read. By secondary school, they’re expected to read to learn. But what if they can't?
